Introducing our Musical TeamA little bit about our musical team
Mr Andrew Chinnock
Andrew started receiving piano lessons at the age of five and soon stepped in as pianist at his local Sunday School. From there he progressed, being appointed organist at St Theodore’s Church, Kenfig Hill, when he was just twelve years old, simultaneously enjoying residencies at local clubs as a Saturday evening organist. He would also become organist at St James’ Church, Pyle and at St Mary Magdelene, Maudlam.
Under the tutelage of his school music teacher, Alan James, Andrew became a well-known pianist/organist in and around Kenfig Hill. His first foray into the world of choral accompanying was in 1993 when he was appointed accompanist for the Mid Glamorgan Mixed Choir. He would soon become accompanist for Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir – a position he held for ten years, returning to his hometown choir in 2009. Keeping his connections with his locality, he taught piano in Cynffig Comprehensive School and assisted in GCSE and A-level practical exams, school shows and concerts having previously been a school pianist at Afon-y-Felin Primary School. He also played keyboard in a local ska/reggae band and was a violist in the Mid Glamorgan Youth Orchestra.
Since moving to the Cynon Valley, Andrew has worked with several choirs in the locality, including the Phoenix Singers. He was appointed accompanist and subsequently, Musical Director of Côr Meibion Abercynon and in February 2018 Andrew became Musical Director of the Phoenix Singers.
In 2015 Andrew returned to full time education, studying firstly an Access to Higher Education (Science) Diploma. He is currently in his second year of a Bachelor of Music degree at Cardiff University where he conducts the male choir as well as offering his services as an accompanist.
Joseph is 18 years old and is a student at Neath Port Talbot college. He has played the piano for 10 years. At age 15, Joseph attained his Grade 8 ABRSM examination, and is currently studying for his Diploma with Jeremy Ryan. He is in demand as a soloist having performed with numerous choirs and at dinner and charity events. At 9 years old, Joseph reached the Urdd National Eisteddfod for the first time, and has appeared on 4 occasions since then. Since age 11, Joseph has also played at wedding functions. In 2017, Joseph won the Rotary young musician award for the district and regional competitions, and made it to the final round which was held at Cardiff university of music.
Joseph is also a keen arranger / composer. In addition to arranging a piano and harp Les Miserables medley for his own GCSE Performing Examination, Joseph has also arranged items for his old school to perform at their Annual Christmas Festivals. He has formed his own band, La la vintage, where he takes modern songs, and arranges them so that they have a vintage jazz twist to them.
Joseph is the former accompanist for the Merthyr Tydfil ladies choir, and regularly accompanies vocalists and instrumentalists for both concerts and examinations. He took up the position of accompanist for the Phoenix Singers in spring 2018 and is also accompanist for Neath male voice choir and Abercynon male voice choir, and his College choir.
