Introducing our Musical TeamA little bit about our musical team
Mr David Lewis BA(Hons) PGCE FGMS
David was born and brought up in Merthyr Tydfil. He was educated at Cyfarthfa High School and is a graduate of the University of Wales, Lampeter with a BA (Hons) in Welsh.
In 2002 David gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and now teaches in a Welsh Medium Primary School where he is responsible for the direction of the school choir and school musical projects. David’s musical interests began when he joined the Cefn Coed Male Choir as a teenager, and the Cyfarthfa High School Mixed Choir.
He then studied piano with Gwen Rowland Price and Susan Thomas and has held the position of church organist of St Tydfil’s Well Church, Merthyr Tydfil from 1995 until 2016. David also held the position of churchwarden at the same church for over 10 years. He is also in demand as a ‘relief organist’ working with many denominations on a regular basis despite remaining a committed Roman Catholic. David has conducted male, female, mixed and children’s choirs since the age of 18 and has been responsible for the direction of school productions. Also David gets asked from time to time to conduct the good old ‘Gymanfa Ganu’ and is able to combine both his linguistic skills with his love of church music and hymns.
He has also appeared on S4C and has starred in Welsh Language children’s programmes. David was Musical Director of Côr Y Ganolfan Gymraeg a small Welsh Medium Choir in Merthyr Tydfil and then accepted the post of Deputy Conductor to the Glynneath Male Choir in 2004. In 2005 David became the Musical Director of Cefn Hengoed Ladies Choir and took them on their first tour to Spain in 2009.
In 2010 David became the founder Musical Director of The Phoenix Singers and hopes to have a long association with them helping to promote the art of female choral singing. David has had the pleasure of working with notable musicians such as Tim Rhys-Evans in musical workshops and also the BBC Radio Wales Presenter Dr Chris Needs MBE.
David is a Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and Singers.
