About UsA little bit about the choir
The Phoenix Singers
The Phoenix Singers was formed in November 2010 by a group of like-minded ladies of all ages and backgrounds who share a love of singing in a choir. We enjoy singing a wide variety of music and our repertoire ranges from traditional Welsh and English songs to more modern and contemporary music including music from the shows and pop songs.
Despite being a fairly new choir, The Phoenix Singers have been fortunate to have sung at some exciting venues and events. In 2014, we had the privilege of singing on the Glanfa stage at the Millennium Centre and in 2016, we were invited to participate in the mass choir at the Roald Dahl – City of the Unexpected event in Cardiff.
Closer to home, we enjoy staging and participating in concerts in our local area and have sung in many concerts in Abercynon. We enjoy singing with other choirs and often collaborate with our neighbours, Côr Meibion, Abercynon. We have also been fortunate to sing with the children at Abercynon Community School and also Perthcelyn Primary School and love taking part in community fundraising events, such as the opening of the refurbished Memorial pool at the sports centre, the turning on of the Christmas lights in Pontypridd and the Mayor’s Christmas Carol Service.
Charity work is close to our hearts and as much as the ladies of The Phoenix Singer’s love a good sing, we are delighted if this singing results in raising money for a great cause. As well as joining in with community events, our members nominate a charity each year. Since we began, we have raised money for a number of deserving causes including: the Stroke Association; a local Dementia Care charity (Cwm Taff Health Board); MIND; Jack’s Appeal and The Cinnamon Trust. We aim to help local causes wherever possible and 2020 has certainly challenged us all. From the devastating flooding of our local communities in the early months to the onset of a global pandemic, there has never been a time where pulling together as a community has been more important. What we have lost by the inability to stage concerts this year, our members have more than made up for with enthusiastic donations of resources, money and time by making, donating and giving. They have found a way to help and as a choir, we are so proud of them all. This charity work is very important to us and something we are passionate about continuing.
Of course, we cannot do any of this work without the encouragement, support and direction of our extremely talented musical director: Mr Andrew Chinnock and our team of accompanists. The Phoenix Singers are extremely fortunate to have them. Alone, we are an enthusiastic, friendly group of ladies who enjoy singing, but with their help, we are a choir.
So, if you enjoy singing and are looking for a rewarding hobby, we are always happy to see new faces. You don’t need experience of singing in a choir. Our musical team will teach you all you need to know and other choir members will be there for help and support. We offer a warm welcome to ladies from 16 years of age and upwards.
Practice is every Thursday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 at Abercynon Community Centre, Station Road, Abercynon. CF45 4NE.
Please note: Due to COVID-19 safety restrictions, practice is currently suspended. We will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. Take care everyone – see you on the other side.
